Indie distributor Neon has acquired the rights to “Artificial,” a forthcoming documentary about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, after Amazon walked away from the project upon discovering its broader corporate strategy requires Altman to fail catastrophically.
SEATTLE — Amazon MGM Studios had initially secured the global distribution rights to the film, which chronicles Altman’s dramatic rise at the vanguard of the generative artificial intelligence boom. However, internal memos revealed that Amazon executives grew increasingly uncomfortable with the film's narrative arc after the company's venture arm poured $4 billion into Anthropic, OpenAI's chief rival. The massive capital injection officially made Amazon a hostile actor in Altman's life, creating an unbridgeable conflict between the studio's release slate and its parent company's desire to see the subject driven into irrelevance.
It simply does not make synergistic sense to distribute an inspirational hero's journey about a man we are currently spending four billion dollars to crush into fine powder.
The decision highlights the growing integration between Amazon’s entertainment offerings and its aggressive cloud-computing strategy. Sources close to the studio noted that early cuts of the film portrayed Altman as a visionary pioneer and a sympathetic figure. This characterization directly conflicted with Amazon Web Services’ quarterly guidance, which dictates that Altman must be comprehensively defeated in the enterprise software marketplace by the end of the fiscal year.
Neon, an independent distributor that notably lacks a multi-billion-dollar cloud infrastructure division or a competing large language model, quickly swooped in to purchase the orphaned film. The boutique studio confirmed it plans to release the documentary in theaters this fall, noting that its marketing department is entirely free from the burden of needing the protagonist to be destroyed by the fourth quarter.
At press time, Amazon executives announced they were pivoting their documentary budget to greenlight a sprawling, six-part hagiography of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, which will be forcefully auto-played on all Prime Video accounts the moment users attempt to purchase paper towels.
