Cincinnati-based Fifth Third Bancorp announced the launch of "Momentum Preferred" on Tuesday, a new consumer deposit product offering identical features to its basic account while requiring a higher minimum balance to avoid a monthly fee.
The new tier, which slots directly between the bank's entry-level Essential Checking and its high-balance Elite offering, provides customers with standard overdraft protection, mobile deposit, and a slate-gray debit card rather than the standard navy blue. To avoid a $14 monthly maintenance charge, depositors must maintain a daily balance of $2,500, up from the $500 required for the entry-level account, while receiving the exact same 0.01% yield on their deposits.
In a presentation to shareholders Tuesday morning, bank leadership positioned the product as a critical right-sizing of its retail strategy designed to capture upwardly mobile consumers.
We recognized a distinct gap in our portfolio for customers who desire the exact same basic ledger services, but with the added psychological discipline of a steeper penalty if their balance drops.
Wall Street reacted positively to the guidance, with analysts at Raymond James upgrading the bank's stock. In a morning note to clients, the firm highlighted the new tier’s potential to quietly generate fee revenue from mid-tier earners who routinely overestimate their ability to float three thousand dollars in a liquid account across a calendar month.
At press time, regional branch managers were reportedly instructed to discard all existing tri-fold lobby brochures and replace them with a slightly wider four-fold variant to accommodate the product's identical fee schedule.
