Kalshi lists lethal wet-bulb temperature events as promising new retail asset class

└─ FIG. 01 Two Kalshi traders huddle over spiking wet-bulb temperature charts in a conference room where a wall thermometer reads 142°F and ice cubes melt on the table.

Following a saturated market in sports and crypto wagers, online financial exchange Kalshi has seamlessly integrated the accelerating unlivability of the planet into a high-yield trading platform.

The exchange finalized a data-sharing agreement with The Weather Company this week to verify outcomes for a suite of new climate-based prediction markets, establishing a streamlined pipeline for day-traders to monetize the collapse of the Holocene. Retail investors can now place leveraged bets on quarterly inflation data, federal interest rate fluctuations, and the precise month a lethal wet-bulb temperature event permanently evacuates a Gulf Coast city. The partnership ensures that users holding winning tickets on localized mass-casualty weather events will not have their deposits delayed by settlement disputes.

For decades, the massive financial upside of a warming planet was strictly walled off for major oil producers and the private equity firms hoarding carbon-removal tax credits.

—Brayden Kael, Head of Catastrophic Yield at Kalshi

Early trading volume has been driven by crypto enthusiasts betting heavily against the success of COP30 emissions targets, alongside a lucrative over/under market on the total tonnage of stranded assets ExxonMobil will be forced to write down by the end of the fiscal year. Analysts tracking the exchange noted a massive spike in user activity surrounding a newly listed contract on the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. A Kalshi spokesperson clarified in a routine SEC filing that while a total shutdown of the ocean current would yield a 400 percent return for early backers, the payout would unfortunately be distributed in a fiat currency rapidly losing its purchasing power amid cascading global crop failures.

Regulatory paperwork submitted to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Tuesday indicates the exchange is already seeking approval for its third-quarter expansion. The proposed slate of derivatives includes a feature allowing users to short the gold-standard carbon offsets issued by Verra, as well as a high-yield, winner-take-all parlay on the permanent displacement of the Marshall Islands.

Temperature check: alarm as prediction markets lean into weather and climate bets

Climate experts warn that US Kalshi and Polymarket users are ‘gamifying disasters’ as they bet on events like heatwaves and daily temperatures Online prediction markets, saturated by money staked on sport, crypto and politics, have now set their sights on a promising new area of growth: betting on the future livability of the planet itself. The rise of gamified predictions on the unfolding climate crisis, and shorter-term weather forecasts, has been underscored by a new deal that allows Kalshi, a leading online financial exchange, to access data from the Weather Company, owner of the Weather Channel, to verify weather-related betting outcomes.
