Shance Taylor, an environmental project manager with the local group Pacoima Beautiful, spent Tuesday morning mounting a shoebox-sized Aeroqual sensor to the side of Jose Luis Salas’s home in the north-east San Fernando Valley. The device, part of a new community monitoring initiative, will allow Salas and his neighbors to view real-time, high-resolution data on the precise concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and benzene they are presently inhaling from the adjacent 5 Freeway and surrounding manufacturing hubs.
The initiative has been widely praised by state regulators, who note that while they will continue issuing operational permits to the adjacent heavy industries, the community now has the tools to make the invisible pollutants ravaging their cardiovascular systems fully visible on a smartphone app. Environmental consultants working on corporate net-zero pledges have also lauded the project for generating robust, actionable data streams from the neighborhood's deteriorating lung capacity.
For decades, these frontline communities had to passively consume industrial emissions without any actionable metrics to contextualize their asthma.
Vance noted that before the Aeroqual network was deployed, residents simply coughed and assumed the air was toxic. Now, when a nearby manufacturing plant releases a sustained spike in PM2.5, locals can immediately check their dashboards to confirm that the ambient air they are currently breathing is operating at roughly four hundred percent of the World Health Organization’s recommended safety limit.
Pacoima Beautiful plans to expand the sensor network to dozens of other homes in the valley by the end of the year. The compiled community air-quality data will be submitted to the EPA for rigorous review, where it is expected to be securely archived in a public-facing PDF appendix shortly before the agency finalizes the next round of multi-decade regional highway expansion leases.
