The World Weather Attribution group reported Tuesday that the heat dome, which pushed temperatures across Spain and France 15 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages, was made at least 100 times more likely by global warming. In response, Shell's legal team issued a memorandum to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), arguing that referring to the crisis with generic terminology legally erases decades of the company's targeted, proprietary atmospheric adjustments.
It is deeply frustrating to spend forty years systematically dismantling global carbon regulations, expanding deep-water exploration, and meticulously engineering a 1.5-degree baseline overshoot, only to have the resulting meteorological phenomena credited to a vague, authorless concept.
The push for meteorological intellectual property rights comes as fossil fuel producers increasingly seek to quantify their operational impacts in annual ESG disclosures. A consortium including BP, TotalEnergies, and Saudi Aramco has submitted a joint framework to the World Meteorological Organization. The proposal outlines a naming convention where extreme weather events would be formally branded by the specific producer whose historical Scope 3 emissions predominantly shaped the atmospheric blocking pattern.
The consortium's filing also addressed new acoustic buoy technology originally designed to save North Atlantic right whales from shipping collisions. In a concurrent SEC climate disclosure, the companies confirmed they have acquired the technology and integrated it into their LNG tanker fleets as a "marine asset obstruction early-warning system," ensuring vessels can maintain a highly efficient 22 knots through critical habitats while delivering record quarterly dividends.
The WMO is expected to rule on the corporate attribution petition during the technical sessions at COP29 in Baku, shortly before the deadline for the next round of voluntary net-zero pledges and the traditional start of the California fire season.
