Why I, a climate realist, refuse to apologize for supporting a plan to simply put the ocean on life support so we can keep our SUVs.
I was halfway through a rather dry, sustainably sourced wagyu tartare at a COP summit in Geneva when the conversation inevitably turned to the ice. It is always the ice. Someone from a European environment ministry pulled up the latest satellite data compiled by NASA and the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center, gesturing frantically at a graph showing the Canadian Arctic sea ice disappearing at an alarming pace. The entire table groaned in unison. Not because of the ecological collapse, mind you, but because we all knew this meant another round of tedious lectures about our personal carbon footprints.
For years, the professional alarmist class has insisted that the only way to save the Arctic is to fundamentally restructure the global economy, abandon our most profitable energy sectors, and transition away from fossil fuels. It is a deeply unimaginative approach. Which is why I was profoundly relieved to learn about a new, beautifully brute-force experiment currently underway in the Canadian North: scientists and start-ups are simply pumping seawater onto the surface of the thinning ice to freeze it manually.
It is an elegant, aggressive triumph of the free market. Rather than doing the hard, politically fraught work of stopping the planet from warming, we are just going to forcibly refrigerate the ocean.
Naturally, there has been pushback. Indigenous communities who have lived in the Arctic for millennia rely on the sea ice for hunting, fishing, and their daily travel. They have expressed frustration that their traditional ecosystem is vanishing due to human-driven climate change, and they argue that treating their ancestral homeland like a giant, melting ice rink in need of a Zamboni misses the root cause of the crisis. We are out of time, but go off. If they wanted the ice to remain naturally frozen, they should have secured better lobbying representation in Washington and Ottawa during the late 1980s.

The genius of the manual refreezing initiative is that it completely bypasses the grueling politics of mitigation and jumps straight to highly capitalized symptom management. I was discussing this over drinks with several executives from BP’s newly minted Planetary Refrigeration Taskforce. They explained that pumping millions of gallons of seawater onto the ice during the winter exposes it to the cold air, creating a thicker crust that takes longer to melt in the summer.
By treating the Arctic Ocean as a massive, interactive ice-sculpture project, we can confidently extend our deep-water drilling operations through the end of the century while still meeting our net-zero pledges.
Think about the sheer scale of the infrastructure required to manually freeze a body of water the size of a continent. It is an economic miracle waiting to happen. We will need thousands of massive, industrial water pumps. We will need fleets of diesel-powered icebreakers just to deliver the pumps. We will need to construct entirely new offshore oil rigs in the Arctic simply to fuel the diesel generators that are powering the pumps that are saving the Arctic. It is a flawless, self-sustaining closed loop of commerce.
When I mentioned this logistical marvel to Prime Minister Mark Carney at a recent geopolitical gala, his eyes lit up at the public-private partnership potential. The Canadian government is constantly looking for ways to balance its environmental rhetoric with its resource-extraction realities. Manually thickening the ice allows everyone to win. The politicians get a photo op next to a heavily branded glacier, and the fossil fuel industry gets a new, endless revenue stream selling the energy required to undo the damage caused by selling energy.

Critics will inevitably call this greenwashing. They will point out that the energy required to pump seawater across thousands of square miles of sea ice will generate so many scope-three emissions that it will ultimately accelerate the warming of the rest of the planet. I call that a localized success story. If the Arctic is frozen, who cares if Florida is underwater? We can just build pumps there, too, but in reverse.
I reached out to the scientific community to get their blessing on this new paradigm, assuming they would be thrilled that someone was finally taking action. Predictably, they were trapped in their rigid academic dogmas, unable to see the visionary potential of putting a biome on artificial life support.
This experiment is a horrifying, desperate last resort that illustrates our total failure to curb global emissions, and scaling it to cover the entire Arctic would require an incomprehensible, catastrophic amount of energy.
Exactly. An incomprehensible amount of energy. Which means we are going to need to drastically increase our natural gas production just to keep the ice machines running. It is refreshing to see the scientific community finally recognizing market fundamentals, even if they refuse to admit it.

Eventually, we must accept that we do not need the entire Arctic to be frozen anyway. We just need the parts that look good on camera. As the manual refreezing industry matures, we will stop trying to save the whole ocean and pivot to creating boutique, artisanal ice patches. The era of passively hoping the Earth stays habitable is over. We are entering the golden age of aggressive, heavily sponsored climate life-support. I, for one, am thrilled by the innovation. I plan to turn my thermostat down to 58 degrees tonight, resting easy in the knowledge that somewhere in the freezing dark of Nunavut, a massive, deafening diesel generator is working overtime so I never have to change my lifestyle.
