The petition urges the Food and Drug Administration to halt the routine administration of medically critical drugs to healthy food-producing animals, a practice advocates confidently label "unsafe." However, public health researchers emphasize that the association between feeding millions of tons of tetracycline to perfectly healthy chickens and the emergence of untreatable superbugs in humans is, at this stage, largely observational.
A recent meta-analysis published in The New England Journal of Medicine suggested a "potential, though statistically noisy" relationship between replacing basic agricultural hygiene with daily prophylactic drug regimens and the gradual rendering of all human surgeries fatally dangerous. Still, the study’s authors disclosed multiple limitations, noting a high risk of confounding variables, such as the distinct possibility that the human immune system is simply deciding to become weaker on its own.
While in vitro models and preliminary epidemiological data suggest that utilizing our last line of antimicrobial defense as a cheap growth serum for cattle accelerates pathogen resistance, we lack the double-blind, placebo-controlled trials necessary to establish true causality.
The FDA has similarly advised against regulatory whiplash, releasing a statement indicating that halting the drugs could introduce "unforeseen systemic variables" into the agricultural sector. Agency analysts recommended further in vivo studies to determine if livestock can biologically survive standing in a foot of their own waste without a steady, preventative drip of erythromycin.
Until more robust, peer-reviewed longitudinal data can be gathered over the next several decades, patients are advised not to abruptly alter their indirect consumption of agricultural antibiotics. The agency recommends that the public continue to treat the looming specter of untreatable staph infections as a compelling point of interest for future academic inquiry.
