While early observational data suggests the synthetic cell is metabolizing and reproducing, medical experts warn against jumping to the conclusion that the entity has actually achieved life. The researchers who engineered the structure have launched a public benefit corporation to share the technology, pending further peer review.
A preprint published this week in a JAMA sub-journal detailed the creation of the synthetic structure, noting that its cellular division is currently tracking alongside traditional biological markers. However, lead authors stressed that the relationship between a beating cellular membrane and actual life is strictly observational at this stage, reminding the public that correlation does not equal biological animation.
"We are seeing a cluster of self-reported living behaviors, including RNA transcription and protein synthesis, but the sample size of this organism is technically one," noted the study's methodology annex. Independent experts cautioned that without a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial where half the synthetic cohort is deliberately left inanimate, it is impossible to rule out the placebo effect in the cell's respiration.
While the synthetic entity is actively dividing in our incubators and consuming nutrients, we lack the longitudinal data to prove it is alive rather than just experiencing a localized, transient surge in biological activity.
The researchers have submitted their initial findings to the FDA, though the agency’s current guidance classifies the underlying concept of synthetic life as an unregulated dietary supplement. Until a Phase 3 trial can be completed over the next four to six decades, the CDC advises treating the synthetic cell as an inert chemical slurry that just happens to be highly associated with cellular mitosis.
