Buster, 11, a terrier mix and stalwart defender of the Gable family perimeter, died Tuesday in Olathe, Kansas, after valiantly repelling an unprovoked Amazon delivery on his front porch. During a decorated decade of service, Buster successfully deterred more than 4,000 postal workers, neutralized countless rogue squirrels, and single-handedly faced down a terrifying plastic grocery bag that breached the driveway in 2018. Despite declining hip health, he maintained an unbroken vigil at the bay window, never once allowing a cardboard box to touch the welcome mat without severe vocal reprimand.
He held the line against that blue van until his very last breath, giving his life to protect this family from a two-day shipment of paper towels.
Buster is survived by his human companions; a partially destroyed squeaky mallard; and an untethered, lingering resentment toward the municipal garbage truck. Services will be held privately at his favorite patch of sun on the living room rug.
