PHILADELPHIA — Gritty, 6, the towering orange entity who served as the mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers, died Tuesday after slowly wading into the freezing waters of the Delaware River to fulfill an ancient municipal prophecy. Born from arena construction dust and regional hostility in 2018, he lived a brief but aggressively vibrant life. He held the metropolitan record for threatening visiting broadcast crews and successfully survived a 2021 incident in which he consumed an active industrial snowblower.
