I called for its immediate dismantling. I marched. I spoke on panels. I nodded gravely while folk singers performed acoustic ballads about uranium.
But yesterday, I decided it was time to let the state keep the plant open.
Intellectual growth is a painful process for the lesser minds of the electorate, but for a seasoned columnist, it is as effortless as ordering a second glass of Pinot Noir. The reality is that California needs clean energy to meet its aggressive climate goals, and I am finally brave enough to admit that the thing I spent my entire career trying to destroy is actually the only thing that can save us.

Dunlap gets it. We are synergizing our approach to the grid. We are moving past the tired, pedestrian solutions of the past decade.
Let us speak candidly about renewables for a moment. Solar power is inherently passive. The panels just sit there on your roof, begging the sun for scraps, getting covered in dust and bird droppings. Wind turbines are even worse—they are the needy dependents of the atmosphere, useless unless the barometric pressure happens to be in a cooperative mood. I have a very simple solution to this problem: we simply stop worrying about it.

But we should certainly build them somewhere. Perhaps Fresno. I have flown over Fresno many times, and it seems like the sort of place that would genuinely appreciate a massive concrete dome to break up the visual monotony of the almond orchards.
Say what you will about the inherent risks of extending the lifespan of a fifty-year-old nuclear facility perched on a web of geologic fractures, but it is undeniably bold. And at the end of the day, isn't bold leadership exactly what I have been providing to this state all along?
