The progressive left is treating the president's signature omnibus package like a catastrophic corporate giveaway, but repealing it now would be devastating to the donors I had lunch with.
Democratic candidates are currently crisscrossing the Rust Belt, promising to tear up President Donald Trump’s signature legislative achievement, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. At every town hall, they call it a disastrous giveaway to the ultra-wealthy. They call it a structural assault on the working class. They call it eight thousand pages of unreadable corporate subsidies held together by a staple, a prayer, and a total suspension of the federal ethics code.
Say what you will about the optics of passing a $4 trillion omnibus package at three in the morning without any floor debate, but we have to look at the reality of governing. I’ve watched this town operate for three decades, and the simple truth is that ripping up this legislation would be a catastrophic mistake for the very voters Democrats claim to champion.
Even if the Democrats somehow manage to take back the House, the Senate math remains immovable, and President Trump still holds the veto pen. The crusade to repeal the One Big Beautiful Bill is a fairy tale sold to the base to drive fundraising emails. But more importantly, the repeal narrative represents a fundamental misunderstanding of how deeply this legislation is already holding up the load-bearing walls of our economy.
I recently attended a closed-door dinner in Georgetown hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, sitting between two men who actually understand the global flow of capital. One of them, a managing director at a private equity firm that recently acquired and liquidated three regional hospital systems to hit a third-quarter growth target, leaned over his sea bass and explained the situation to me in terms the progressive left refuses to hear.
The base wants to tear this legislation down because it formally transfers the middle class to a holding company, but they fundamentally fail to appreciate how well-managed that holding company is.
He is right, of course. The One Big Beautiful Bill didn’t just lower the corporate tax rate to a gentleman’s zero; it completely rewired the administrative state to operate with the frictionless efficiency of a luxury concierge service. The progressive wing loves to hyperventilate about the bill’s Title IX provisions, which reclassify federal regulatory agencies as "advisory lifestyle brands," but they conveniently ignore the stability this provides to the markets.
Take the "American Patriot Dividend" buried in Section 402. Yes, it effectively mandates that the Treasury mail a quarterly rebate check directly to the shareholders of the top fifty defense contractors. And yes, critics point out that it is funded entirely by a new federal sales tax on baby formula and dialysis equipment. But what the populist messaging completely misses is the downstream liquidity this unleashes for the everyday Americans who happen to manage wealth portfolios.
Last weekend, while waiting for my flight out of Reagan National, I had a revealing conversation with a senior consultant from K Street. She was exhausted. She had spent the last year working tirelessly to ensure the One Big Beautiful Bill included the precise loopholes her clients required to legally classify their private jets as emotional support vehicles. Tearing up the bill now would mean all that bipartisan lobbying work was for nothing. Is that really the message Democrats want to send to the job creators who frequent our city's finest steakhouses?
The real problem here isn’t the legislation; it’s the Democratic messaging apparatus. They have allowed their base to become obsessed with ideological purity. The average voter in Ohio or Pennsylvania doesn’t care about the Gini coefficient or whether a massive omnibus bill quietly transferred ownership of the national parks to a consortium of fossil fuel executives. They care about pragmatism. They care about leaders who are willing to reach across the aisle and agree not to touch the carried interest loophole.
Let’s look at the "Beautiful Prosperity Horizon" clause, perhaps the most misunderstood element of the entire package. By permanently capping the federal minimum wage and indexing it inversely to inflation, the bill provides employers with the ultimate gift: certainty. When a fast-food franchise owner knows exactly how much cheaper their labor will be next year, they can finally invest in automated ordering kiosks. That is innovation. That is the engine of American exceptionalism at work.
House Democrats need to grow up. If they win the majority, they shouldn’t waste the public’s time trying to dismantle a masterpiece of wealth concentration that has already been priced into the S&P 500. Instead, they should do what serious adults do: hold a few performative hearings, issue a sternly worded press release, and then quietly appropriate the funds necessary to ensure the One Big Beautiful Bill operates exactly as intended.
