A coalition of theoretical physicists has published a formal plea warning that if the cosmos does not immediately pump the brakes, decades of established math will be entirely ruined.
The crisis, known in astrophysics as the Hubble tension, reached a breaking point this week when Nobel laureate Adam Riess published new measurements of Cepheid variable stars. Using the James Webb Space Telescope, Riess’s team confirmed that the cosmos is expanding outward at a majestic, terrifying 73.2 kilometers per second per megaparsec. It is a breathtaking display of dark energy in motion, yielding a statistically significant discrepancy that has absolutely infuriated theoretical cosmologists who strictly need the number to be lower.
Relying on the cosmic microwave background, standard model purists insist the universe’s expansion rate was settled a decade ago and have demanded the cosmos immediately adjust its current trajectory to match their textbook calculations.
We have run the Planck satellite data thousands of times, and the mechanism is incredibly clear: the fabric of spacetime is legally required to expand at exactly 67.4 kilometers per second per megaparsec.
However, independent researchers not involved in the paper caution that ordering the universe to slow down may not yield the desired results. Writing in a new preprint uploaded to arXiv, astrophysicist Dr. Elena Lin noted that the sample size of galaxies actively ignoring the standard model is only growing.
