The cosmos is a place of profound and brutal trade-offs. A star must collapse to seed the universe with heavy elements. A black hole must devour light to anchor a galaxy. And down here on our fragile blue dot, a frog must apparently surrender its sperm to survive a fungal apocalypse.
For decades, the herpetological community has been locked in a desperate war against chytridiomycosis. This ruthless fungal infection has been ravaging amphibian populations across the globe, coating the delicate skin of its victims until they can no longer absorb oxygen. Extinctions have cascaded through the rainforests like falling dominoes. It is a genuine ecological tragedy.
Recently, however, the scientific establishment has coalesced around a supposed miracle cure. By placing the sick frogs in heated enclosures, researchers can elevate the amphibians' body temperatures just enough to literally bake the chytrid fungus to death. The frogs emerge from these thermal chambers cleansed, breathing freely, and entirely cured of the plague.
But we must ask ourselves: what kind of life are we handing back to these creatures? According to a new slate of findings, the elevated temperatures required to eradicate the fungus have a devastating side effect. The heat ravages the frogs’ sperm levels. We are saving their lives by systematically stripping them of their virility.
