There is a sickness in modern sports media, a compulsive need to ruin a beautiful moment with something as lifeless and pedantic as a historical fact. When Coastal Carolina unveiled their bold, maximalist 1990s throwback uniforms for Week 7, the internet stat-nerds immediately rushed to their keyboards to point out a supposed flaw in the narrative. The university, they sneered, did not actually field a football team until 2003. They proudly presented this piece of trivia as if a lack of an institutional charter, a roster, or a stadium somehow invalidates the rich, unyielding culture of 1990s Chanticleers football.
I am sick of it. I look at those gorgeous teal and bronze jerseys, with their oversized shoulder stripes and aggressive drop-shadow numbers, and I do not see an anachronism. I see a profound tribute to a decade of young men who never lost a single game, never complained about playing time, and never once embarrassed the university off the field. You want to talk about intangibles? Not one player entered the transfer portal between 1990 and 1999. You simply do not see that kind of loyalty in today's game.
Back in my day, we understood that a football program is more than just a collection of athletes playing out a schedule. It is an aura. It is a state of mind. If you walked across the Coastal Carolina campus on a crisp autumn Saturday in 1996, walking right over the empty patch of dirt where Brooks Stadium would eventually be built seven years later, you could feel the electricity in the air. You could close your eyes and perfectly envision a hard-nosed, disciplined, entirely hypothetical defense grinding out a tough 14-10 victory over an imaginary regional rival. The modern fan only cares about the box score. They have completely lost the ability to appreciate the sheer, unadulterated potential of a void.
These throwback uniforms capture that era perfectly. The aggressive, jagged fonts speak to the administrative frustration of a student government desperately trying to get a feasibility study approved by the Board of Trustees. The pristine white helmets honor the blank slate of a university athletic budget that was going entirely to the baseball team. Every stitch is a reminder of the blood, sweat, and tears that would have been shed if the state legislature had allocated the funding just one decade earlier.
We wanted to honor the sacrifices of the young men who hypothetically would have bled for this university if the sport had been offered during their enrollment.
I sat down for a $90 steak with a major Chanticleers booster last week, and he had tears in his eyes just talking about it. He told me about the 1994 squad—which, technically speaking, consisted of three guys throwing a frisbee outside the student union while listening to Hootie & the Blowfish. But as he rightfully pointed out, those three guys had more heart, more raw competitive fire, than half the kids cashing NIL checks in the Sun Belt conference today. If you had given those frisbee guys a set of pads and a playbook, they would have run the wishbone to perfection. You cannot teach that kind of phantom grit.
That is the problem with this league today. Everyone is obsessed with the eye test, with what they can empirically prove on a television broadcast. But the greatest locker room culture is the one that exists purely in the realm of the theoretical. There were no cell phones in the 1990s Coastal Carolina locker room, primarily because the room itself had not been architecturally rendered yet, but also because of a fundamental respect for the game. There was no load management. There were no postgame presser meltdowns. There was just a pure, pristine silence, unbroken by the sound of a referee's whistle.
So when the Chanticleers take the field this week draped in the maximalist aesthetic of a bygone era they did not participate in, I will be standing and saluting. I refuse to let Wikipedia dictate my reality. I will be wearing my vintage 1997 Coastal Carolina Football windbreaker, which I had custom embroidered yesterday, and I will be honoring the ghosts of the greatest college football dynasty that never existed.
