It takes courage to look at a 20-year experiment in renewable energy and realize you should just go back to digging massive holes in the ocean. Here is why the oil giant's decision to drop startups is a triumph of product management.

Crude oil is essentially the perfect high-retention enterprise product. The churn rate is virtually zero because the global supply chain literally stops moving without it. By shutting down the distraction of venture capital, BP is recognizing that you don't need to seed a Series A mobility scooter startup when you already control the fundamental energy layer of the entire geopolitical stack.
The smartest people I know are already rotating out of climate-tech funds and quietly looking into offshore mineral rights. The realization didn't happen overnight for BP, either. I was having coffee last month with a mid-level associate on their innovation team who admitted the internal metrics just weren't there. They were spending millions evaluating pitch decks for algae-based biofuel algorithms, while the legacy division was generating billions by simply noticing that there was pressurized carbon trapped under the Gulf of Mexico.

The broader tech industry should be taking notes. How many Web3 pivots or AI side-quests are currently draining capital from companies that should just be focusing on their core monolith? BP looked at the decentralized, messy, highly-regulated future of green energy and said no, we are going to stick with our proprietary monolithic architecture: a pipe that goes straight down into the dirt.
It is a beautiful thing to watch a legacy player cut the dead weight, ignore the moral panic, and commit entirely to the bit. I, for one, can't wait to see what they pump next.
