Regulators are panicking because Cody Wilson, the creator of the world’s first fully 3D-printed firearm, claims to have developed a workaround to thwart government-mandated software meant to block consumer printers from rendering gun parts.
To the legacy press, this is an escalating battle between law enforcement trying to stem the tide of untraceable ghost guns and dangerous individuals seeking workarounds. But if we look at this from first principles, it is actually something much more beautiful. This is an elegant, frictionless triumph of the open-source community over an obsolete, analog bureaucracy.
It is time we stopped treating the 3D-printed ghost gun as a weapons issue, and started recognizing it for what it truly is: a masterclass in decentralized hardware deployment.
When you strip away the emotional baggage of lethal violence and bypassing metal detectors, the Second Amendment is essentially an early open-source manifesto.
