Amazon Studios announced Tuesday it is officially discarding actor Ryan Hurst from its upcoming God of War series, citing a catastrophic hardware failure in the performer’s skeletal stack following a routine on-set stunt.
Hurst, who was cast as the Spartan demigod Kratos in January, successfully completed four episodes before his frame buckled under the physical demands of the role. Deadline reported that while the Sons of Anarchy star’s brooding demeanor and vocal timbre met the project’s requirements, his human collarbone simply could not support the workload.
The production was filming early scenes for episode five when Hurst attempted to pry open the jaws of a hydraulic beast, resulting in a severe fracture. According to a leaked memo—which commended Hurst for his initial effort—the production team ultimately concluded that the actor could not deliver blunt-force trauma at scale, and ordered him safely transported to a local hospital.

The sudden casting pivot leaves the four completed episodes in limbo. Studio executives are reportedly exploring whether they can salvage Hurst’s existing footage by digitally pasting his face onto a reinforced steel I-beam wearing leather armor.
