The tech giant announced Tuesday that surging component costs tied to artificial intelligence have finally provided the perfect excuse to transition its user base into permanent hardware renters.
Apple formally unveiled its "Apple Hardware+ Leasing Program" at a press event in Cupertino, confirming that the soaring price of AI-capable processors means the era of actually owning a smartphone is over. For a starting fee of $45 a month, users can now enjoy the privilege of holding a device that the company can legally repossess at any time.
Executives explained that the integration of Apple Intelligence requires advanced silicon that is simply too expensive for a one-time purchase. Instead of absorbing the component costs, Apple is offering a flexible 36-month lease term, at the end of which the customer must return the phone, upgrade to a more expensive lease, or face a balloon payment roughly equivalent to the price of a used sedan.
We realized that allowing customers to pay off their phones and use them for four years without giving us more money was a massive bug in our ecosystem.
Wall Street analysts praised the move, noting that the program perfectly aligns with the industry-wide push toward hardware serfdom at scale. By retaining legal ownership of the physical device, Apple can remotely brick any leased iPhone if a user misses a payment, attempts an unauthorized battery replacement, or is caught holding the phone with an unapproved grip.
The company confirmed that all leased devices will ship with a permanent, un-hideable lock screen widget counting down the days until the handset is reclaimed by Apple Park security.
