Brazil House formally classifies critical minerals as tribute ahead of Trump meeting

BRASILIA — Seeking to capitalize on the nation’s vast natural reserves, Brazil’s lower house approved sweeping legislation on Tuesday to officially designate all domestic lithium, niobium, and rare earth elements as diplomatic tribute for U.S. President Donald Trump.

The bill, which establishes a strict regulatory framework for the exploration of strategic minerals, ensures that any highly conductive metal pulled from the Amazon basin is immediately polished, placed in a decorative wooden box, and handed directly to the incoming American leader. Lawmakers noted that organizing the nation’s subterranean wealth into easily transportable offerings is an essential step in modernizing Brazil’s geopolitical strategy.

The legislation requires the Ministry of Mines and Energy to rapidly categorize the country's $1.5 trillion mineral wealth by how quickly it can be loaded onto a Mar-a-Lago-bound cargo plane. Under the new rules, international mining conglomerates will be barred from accessing newly discovered graphite or copper deposits until Trump has had the opportunity to personally inspect them and point at the ones he wants.
