We need these autonomous fleets battling for dominance in the wild. If a Zoox and a Waymo get into a territorial standoff in the valet lane of the Bellagio, it forces the AI to develop conflict resolution skills. The free market demands a robotaxi turf war. I want to see a Waymo aggressively cut off a Zoox, only for the Zoox to instantly calculate a retaliatory route that traps the Waymo in a hotel roundabout for six hours. That is how we achieve artificial general intelligence.
The detractors will point out that human drivers, for all their flaws, occasionally make eye contact to avoid hitting you. But eye contact is not scalable. Empathy cannot be quantified in a GitHub repo. As the Nevada cap vanishes later this month, we are stepping into a beautiful, infinite horizon of autonomous pods. I, for one, will not apologize for progress. If you are afraid of walking across the street in Las Vegas because you might get nudged by a driverless Amazon carriage, I gently suggest you stay inside. The future is driving, and it doesn't have a brake pedal.
