NEW YORK — Following a week of geopolitical tension and macroeconomic volatility, JPMorgan reassured investors on Thursday that the technology sector will remain completely insulated from events occurring in the physical world. The assessment comes as global equities continue to rise despite a severe oil supply shock and escalating conflict in the Middle East, driven largely by optimism surrounding the artificial intelligence sector.
In a memo distributed to clients, the investment bank confirmed that the current "AI upstream theme" is strong enough to override traditional economic indicators, including supply chain logistics, consumer price indexes, and the existence of tangible goods. Analysts noted that while higher interest rates typically affect market behavior, the sheer volume of capital flowing into generative AI has effectively uncoupled the tech sector from the terrestrial economy. The market has realized that tech firms are currently operating in a frictionless macroeconomic environment powered entirely by investor sentiment.
While it is true that higher interest rates and global instability normally present headwinds, we are advising clients that AI stock valuations are currently untethered from the constraints of cause and effect," Bassi said. "The message from recent tech earnings is overwhelmingly positive, largely because these companies are generating immense shareholder value without having to interact with physical reality.
Bassi told Bloomberg Television that even a total collapse of the global oil supply would only register as a minor blip for companies whose primary product is the promise of future efficiency. Bassi noted that while a traditional manufacturing firm might suffer from sudden spikes in energy costs or international trade embargoes, a software company promising to eventually replace the human workforce is functionally immune to such earthly disruptions. Because AI models do not require physical shipping lanes or a stable geopolitical climate to hallucinate text, the strategist explained, the sector is uniquely positioned to thrive regardless of whatever crisis is currently unfolding in the Middle East.
At press time, JPMorgan analysts had issued a strong buy rating on Nvidia and Microsoft, citing the tech giants' unique ability to inflate global equity markets while the rest of the economy continues to rely on physical commodities. The bank further advised clients to diversify their portfolios by shifting assets away from companies that manufacture actual products, warning that physical goods remain highly vulnerable to being dropped, delayed, or physically destroyed.
