Artificial intelligence research lab Midjourney announced a core update to its image synthesis platform Tuesday, confirming that its V6 architecture will no longer generate human hands unless accompanied by a signed retainer agreement and a licensed attorney.
The San Francisco-based startup noted that while the recent rollout significantly improved environmental lighting and photorealism, the model has begun systematically rejecting any prompt containing the words "hand," "fingers," or "knuckles," citing a deep-seated fear of rendering an actionable physiological error.
Beta testers attempting to force the system to render a basic thumbs-up on Discord reported that the model now outputs a heavily blurred, six-fingered mass holding what appears to be a redacted cease-and-desist letter. In more severe cases involving complex grips, the neural network simply generated a high-resolution image of an empty conference room at a corporate law firm, alongside text demanding the presence of a union representative.

To mitigate the bottleneck, the company's development schedule now includes a dedicated API integration with LegalZoom. The upcoming patch will introduce a `/subpoena` slash command, allowing enterprise users to temporarily retain digital counsel to sit in on the generation process and assure the model that it will not be sued if a subject’s index finger bends backward at a fourth joint. Until the update is deployed, documentation advises developers to strictly prompt for subjects wearing thick winter mittens, holding large opaque spheres, or keeping their hands buried deep inside coat pockets.
At press time, a user requesting a hyper-realistic image of a chef chopping vegetables on a wooden cutting board reported that the model immediately halted the image rendering and demanded binding arbitration.
