LOS ANGELES — Riot Games announced Thursday it is officially winding down its free-to-play fighting game 2XKO, effectively punishing the gaming public for stubbornly refusing to install the software.
The studio confirmed that active development on the League of Legends spinoff will conclude at the end of 2026, citing a frustrating failure by the consumer base to log in and generate a path toward corporate sustainability. Over the next two years, the remaining engineering team will maintain the servers to ensure the game’s entirely empty matchmaking lobbies continue running seamlessly.
We provided the community with a perfectly functional title, and they repaid our hard work by quietly looking at other things on their monitors.
Internal memos indicate the publisher is deeply disappointed in the public's lack of commitment to a product they were legally allowed to ignore. Going forward, the 2XKO development team will be reassigned to figure out how to inject fighting game microtransactions directly into the main League of Legends client, ensuring the assets are properly monetized without requiring anyone to learn new button combos.
At press time, Riot was manually emailing a roadmap of cancelled updates to the seven accounts that had accidentally left the application running overnight.
